Davis Strawberry Project Description
The diploid strawberry species, Fragaria vesca, a putative genome donor to the octoploid, cultivated species (Fragaria x ananassa) is being been developed as a model system for genetic and genomic research in strawberry. For the purpose of contributing to the EST database for strawberry, a cDNA library was constructed from flower buds of F. vesca ssp. vesca 'Yellow Wonder', a highly inbred diploid variety. Over 3200 cDNA clones were partially or completely sequenced, and 2717 EST sequences were submitted to Genbank. This data set, which defines 1910 unigenes, can be utilized as a basis for SSR mining and marker development, PCR primer design and probe construction, gene discovery, and other purposes leading to the development of practical tools for strawberry varietal improvement. This work was funded in part by USDA-NRI Plant Genome grant #2003-35300-3142 and New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Project NH00433.
