Folta Strawberry Project Description
Octoploid strawberries (Fragaria x. ananassa) represent one of the most valued crops in the United States. Despite its economic importance, little is know about the molecular mechanisms that underlie agriculturally-relevant traits, primarily due to a paucity of sequence information. As a first step to remedy this discrepancy a cDNA library has been developed and over 1800 expressed sequence tags (EST's) have been partially sequenced. This information can now be utilized to design SSR's to hasten mapping efforts, develop a basis for interspecies sequence relationships, speed gene discovery, and attribute putative function to genes in strawberry.
